Craft instructions for a dummy chain with name
You would like to have a soother chain with a name? And of course you want it to be something special? The best thing is to create your own unique dummy chain for your baby – or as a gift for friends or family.
With our step-by-step instructions, it's a breeze to make your own dummy chain. Thanks to the photos and the description, it's sure to be a great DIY experience for you. In any case, the result is something very special, something homemade.
Simply choose the wooden and silicone beads that you like as well as the other craft materials. Then you're ready to go!
Craft accessories
- 1 motif clip or plain wooden clip of your choice
- PP polyester cord
- 2 safety beads
- Motif beads, 1 or 2 pieces, as desired and length of name
- Wooden beads (e.g. 8 mm and 10 mm)
- Wooden lenses
- Letter cubes for your desired name
- 1 little bell
- 1 dummy adapter (if a dummy without a retaining ring is used)
Step 1
First of all, you should arrange your chosen wooden letters, wooden beads, wooden lenses, motif clip etc. so that you like the dummy chain design. When making a dummy chain yourself, it is important to make sure that the dummy chain, measured without the dummy clip, is not longer than 22 cm. This is important because otherwise there is a risk that the baby could strangle itself.
Step 2
Now take the PP string and pull it through the clip's metal eyelet. To make it easier to string the cord through the wooden beads, it is best to melt the ends of the cord briefly with the lighter. Then string both ends of the cord through the safety bead's hole (large opening facing away from the clip). Tie a tight double knot in one of the ends. Melt it carefully with a lighter. Sink it into the safety bead. If you make the dummy chain yourself, it is important to do a tear test after each knot.
Step 3
String on your chosen wooden lenses, wooden beads, bells etc. as desired. Please do not string the second safety bead yet.
Tie a double knot over the last wooden round bead or lens so that the dummy chain is secured. You should have reached a maximum of 16.5 cm here, measured without the wooden clip. Otherwise the chain will be too long or there will be no more space for a usable loop.
Step 4
Pass the PP polyester cord back through the last wooden lens once to make a loop. Now you have to measure in any case. The chain without the clip must not be longer than 22 cm, otherwise there is a risk of strangulation for the baby.
Step 5
When you have mastered this somewhat tricky matter, you can string on the last safety bead. Check the loop again to make sure it is not too small, but also that the chain is not too long. Make the loop a little smaller, pull it through and tie a double knot in the PP cord. Weld the knot with the lighter and sink it into the safety bead. The loop is now the same size as measured before.
Now please make sure you do a tear test. This way you can check that the knots are all holding and that the chain does not open.
Please measure the chain again and check that it is a maximum of 22 cm long.
If you use a silicone ring, we recommend that you integrate it permanently into the chain so that you do not exceed the maximum length. The best way to do this is to attach it to the loop. As you can see, making your own dummy chain is possible with patience and practice.
